A host of technologies—from smartphones to lateral-flow strip analyzers—are coming together to make point-of-care diagnostics smaller, faster, and more convenient, as these nine devices show.

Smartphones, biosensor strips, hand-held devices, barcode readers, and lateral-flow strip analyzers have combined to make immunoassay tests for analytes at the point of care (POC) as easy as one, two, three. The National Center for Biotechnology Information in Bethesda, MD, notes the steady increase in POC diagnostic testing over the past 40 years, driven by changes to healthcare delivery in the United States and the potential to diagnose infectious diseases in developing nations. Handheld devices that analyze blood at bedside and smartphone accessories that perform triplexed-biochemical tests for sexually transmitted diseases represent just some of the POC technologies out there. The following products show the diverse ways to diagnose everything from flu at bedside to pet pathogens at home. |
