AAMI has issued a revised edition of its sterilization standards. The three-volume set features topics ranging from radiation, ethylene oxide, and thermal sterilization to reprocessing of reusable medical devices.

The collection is designed as a resource for sterilization officials in healthcare facilities and for manufacturers seeking a better understanding of how their devices will be handled or reprocessed. The revised edition contains 11 documents.

The first volume “Sterilization, Part 1: Sterilization in Health Care Facilities,” contains information on sterility assurance and safe and effective reprocessing of medical and dental devices. This volume includes recommended practices for disinfection and for steam, dry heat, and chemical sterilization.

The second volume, “Sterilization, Part 2: Sterilization Equipment,” is a collection of 13 safety and performance standards for sterilizers used in healthcare facilities and for other sterilization-related equipment.

The third volume, “Sterilization, Part 3: Industrial Process Control,” is a one-stop-shop for contract sterilization facilities and OEMS that ship products in a sterile condition.
