10 Medical Device Crimes that Led to Jail Time—Smedley

In July 2012, Kimberly D. Smedley was sentenced to three years in prison for conspiring to introduce and deliver into interstate commerce an adulterated and misbranded device, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release. Smedley used commercial silicone, not approved by FDA for medical use, to deliver silicone injections for buttocks enlargement. Smedley represented the silicone, which the release notes has industrial uses, as medical grade. 

Smedley made more than $200,000 from the silicone injections, which she administered between 2003 and October 2011 in hotel rooms in a number of cities. One customer suffered severe health problems and hospitalization as a result of silicone poisoning and silicone in her lungs.  

Smedley's sentence: Three years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, restitution of $8,106 and a $25,000 fine
