S-beam load cells constructed of aluminum or steel feature overload protection and high linear accuracy.

Miniature S-beam load cells can be used in several medical applications. The LSB200-series load cells from Futek Advanced Sensor Technology Inc. (Irvine, CA) have high linear accuracy. The cells also feature overload protection up to 10 times the rated output in both tension and compression. The sensing element can be made of aluminum or stainless steel, depending on capacity.

Cells are available in capacities ranging from 10 g to 100 lb for aluminum and 25–100 lb for stainless steel. The package size measures 0.68 × 0.25 × 0.75 in. The aluminum unit weighs 0.3 oz, and the stainless-steel version weighs 0.9 oz. Operating temperature range is from –60° to 200°F, with nonlinearity of less than ±0.1% full scale. Bridge resistance is 350 Ω. Submersible and wireless versions are available.

The company also offers a transducer electronic data sheet (TEDS) for the sensor used in the load cells. Designed to simplify the configuration process, a TEDS contains the sensor’s serial number as well as calibration dates and factors. The technology is implemented via a one-wire electrically erasable, programmable, read-only memory device. The TEDS receives and transmits data, which can be stored or changed as needed. The product using the load cell is responsible for the data transfer.

Medical applications include bag weighing, infusion pumps, blood analyzer processing, drug-delivery systems, and feedback control.
