Medtronic to Cut 44 Jobs at Carlsbad, California Facility
This is the second layoff announced by the company so far in 2024.
In its second planned layoff announced this year, Medtronic said it will cut 44 employees at its facility in Carlsbad, Cali. The layoffs are expected to take effect around May 19, or during a 14-day period beginning on that date and will primarily affect engineer roles but will also include several technician and project management positions.
In addition to the layoffs, Medtronic disclosed in the WARN notice that it plans to restructure and relocate certain operations at the Carlsbad facility but did not specify which operations would be affected.
The announcement comes after the company already laid off up to 40 employees in Ireland due to shutting down its ventilator business in February.
Medtronic isn’t the only company that has cut positions in 2024 so far, in fact, hundreds of medtech employees have gotten the axe since the beginning of the year, spanning from companies big and small.
Livanova and Illumina filed plans in January to lay off more than 100 employees, Zimmer Biomet said it would cut approximately 540 people, and Globus Medical laid off more than 150 in California, specifically targeting Nuvasive employees, only months after the two companies closed their merger.
Additionally, Baxter closed its Massachusetts facility and cut 59 employees, Better Therapeutics laid off its entire staff, and Siemens Healthineers closed its fast track diagnostics unit and cut about 90, along with a number of other companies that also announced layoffs so far in 2024.
