Icelandic orthopedics company Össur is perhaps best known for developing the Flex-Foot Cheetah lower leg prostheses that propelled sprinter Oscar Pistorius, a double lower-leg amputee, to the London Olympics in 2012. Last year, the company debuted an even more impressive concept: mind-controlled prosthetic lower limbs.Implanting myoelectric sensors developed by the Alfred Mann Foundation in an amputee's stump allows the user to control the prosthesis without thinking about it—similar to how able-bodied individuals move. First-in-man studies had two amputees living with the mind-controlled prostheses for over 12 months. The technology works with Össur's Power Knee, Rheo Knee, Proprio Foot, and Symbionic Leg products, according to the company. [Image courtesy of ÖSSUR]
