A cosmetic surgeon partnered with (Sunnyvale, CA) to form a virtual company to develop a method for tightening a patient's skin and soft tissue in order to create a more youthful appearance. Their goal was a treatment that could be delivered in a physician's office using minimal anesthetic, allowing the patient to return to work immediately afterward. Stellartech performed a wide array of activities, including inventing and developing the core technology, providing infrastructure and support services, and manufacturing commercial units. The resulting cooled ablation solution, marketed by Thermage Inc. (Hayward, CA) as the ThermaCool system, is designed to disperse the heating properties of high levels of radio-frequency energy to deeper tissue areas through an insulated treatment tip that permits capacitive coupling. Throughout the treatment, surface tissue is protected by a cooling cryogen spray, which creates a reverse thermal gradient. The system contains microchip and sensor technology that constantly monitors key treatment parameters of the interaction of energy with the tissue and controls the treatment algorithm. The result is a system that smoothes and tightens skin without bruising, swelling, or sutures.
