A ratcheting mechanism contained in a line of screwdrivers enables smoothness and precision.

A patent has been awarded to Gauthier Biomedical (Grafton, WI) for a ratcheting mechanism contained in the company’s line of screwdrivers. The ratcheting screwdriver is designed to limit axial and side-to-side play between the shaft and the handle. With a stainless-steel construction, no-play design, and a variety of silicone handle options, the device provides smoothness and precision for effective ratcheting action.

The mechanism, along with other proprietary enhancements, allow for many options in developing new surgical instruments. The company offers a full prototyping service, from a single prototype to clinical builds. Precision machining, fabricating, and finishing services are offered and small quantities of components and instruments can be built.

According to the company, because its prototypes are built in the same manner that they would be in production, the user gets a more accurate representation of the final product.
