Manufacturers Team Up to Develop LED Systems

Corinne Litchfield

A microelectronics supplier has teamed with a maker of LED-based systems to build medical devices. Endicott Interconnect (EI; Endicott, NY; www.endicottinterconnect.com) and VisiLED Inc. (Oak Grove, MN; www.visiled.com) have announced a joint development and manufacturing agreement.

As part of the contract, EI’s precision equipment manufacturing team will provide contract services to VisiLED. Services will include prototype fabrication, product development, manufacture, and testing. The first product, LED-based operating room lights, will be available for sale in mid-2006.

The companies have already been working together to develop the operating room lighting system, according to Sushil Gupta, VisiLED founder and CTO. “EI has been able to build prototypes from our designs, then transform them into highly reliable parts,” he says. “They have also developed and implemented testing parameters and equipment.”

VisiLED develops LED-based systems for use in surgical suites and medical and dental exam rooms. The systems replace existing halogen and xenon bulb technology with small LED sources. Designed to reduce power consumption, the units produce less heat and are lightweight. The lights also provide greater intensity and improved color. Other products in development include an endoscope light and a device for illuminating deep cavities during surgery.
