Ultra-high-barrier foil material from Flexicon is used in many drug-delivery applications.

An ultra-high-barrier foil-based structure is suitable for moisture- and oxygen-sensitive applications that require a foil lamination to meet or exceed shelf-life expectations. Flexi 6611 from Flexicon Inc. (Cary, IL) features the company’s Flexi-Free solventless technology.

From outside to inside, Flex 6611 offers layers of polyester, adhesive, aluminum foil, adhesive, and clear polyethylene to achieve the moisture vapor and oxygen permeability that many specialty products require. The moisture vapor transmission rate is less than 0.001 g/100 sq in. over 24 hours. Oxygen permeability is less than 0.001 cm3/100 sq in. at 90% relative humidity.

Available in both rollstock and premade pouches, the product is used in drug-delivery systems including metered-dose inhalation systems.

The laminate has been designed for good sealing and machinability to enable optimum production speeds. High-end graphics are available via the company’s Infinit II 10-color flexographic press. The 50-in.-wide gearless machine provides fast changeover and high run speeds.
