Screens for medical filters
Screens for medical filters are manufactured using photoetching technology. The process reportedly produces cleaner, more-efficient, burr-free screens than other techniques. The screens are offered in stainless steel; however, screens made from polyimide and other materials are also ava ilable. Photoetching technology enables designers to create a tapered hole, which can facilitate liquid filtration and back-flow cleaning. Hole sizes can be as small as 0.003 in. Photoetched screens are also engineered not to change over time, which can happen with woven wire mesh screens.

In-line filter
An in-line filter unit incorporates replaceable filters that are available in such materials as nylon, polypropylene, or acetal. The filter unit can be equipped to accommodate barb fittings as small as 1⁄16 in. ID. Standard versions of the unit come with a barb for 5⁄32 in. ID tubing. Optional male and female luers are available with housings made of nylon or polypropylene. The device is cleanable, features an O-ring seal, and is designed to ensure a positive seal from vacuum to 30 psi. Replaceable filters are made of high-density polyethylene. Standard 20- and 60-µm filter sizes are offered.

Injection-molded filters
Injection-molded filters for IV devices are designed for use with adults, children, and babies. The filters feature a two-layer design and compact shape. The manufacturer’s Hi-Flo PES membrane provides controlled drug flow rates and protection against contamination. Clear housings are available, as are green, blue, and amber housings for photosensitive drugs.

IV filters
A company has added three hydrophilic in-line IV filters to its product line. Filter models 12113, 12114, and 12115 feature a hydrophilic primary membrane composed of polyethersulfone and a 0.1-µm-thick hydrophobic vent membrane made of polyvinylidenefluoride They can all be pump or gravity fed. Part 12113 features a clear core and a cylindrical-shaped housing constructed from polyethylene terephthalate. Part 12114 has an acrylic, coin-shaped housing, and features low priming, and a hold-up volume of less than 0.4 ml. Part 12115 has a copolyester cylindrical-shaped housing with a yellow core and is compatible with total nutrient admixture emulsions.
