Laser Measurement System Offers Multipoint Inspection of Catheter Balloons 

System eliminates errors associated with manual contact measurements

A laser measurement system from Interface Associates can accurately inspect multiple areas of balloon catheter dimensions.

A laser measurement system is designed specifically for catheter balloons. It offers an accurate noncontact technique for multipoint inspection of balloon dimensions. According to its maker, Interface Associates (Laguna Niguel, CA), the LMS-100 reduces errors associated with manual contact measurements, as well as variations due to operator skills. 

The system includes a variety of clamping devices and attachments that allow balloon pressurization either by gas or water. Hydraulic testing is done with the balloon submerged in a custom-designed water bath. The unit controls balloon axial movement and rotation with respect to the laser beam. It also maintains the preprogrammed balloon pressure and controls the temperature of the water bath. 

Test programs can be completed and test data be collected automatically using a PC. During the measurement process the LMS-100 scans and maps the entire balloon outline. The test results are shown in both graphical and tabulated form.
