High-Strength Implant-Grade Polymer Works Well under Pressure
BioPEKK polymers are suited for use in hip and knee components and other implantable applications.
Carbon-fiber-blended polymers with almost twice the compressive strength of PEEK are available for medical implant and device applications. BioPEKK is supplied by CoorsTek (Golden, CO; www. coorstek.com) in partnership with Oxford Performance Materials (Enfield, CT), which specializes in the manufacture, blending, and development of high-performance polymer systems.
The materials have successfully passed a 52-week biocompatibility test and have a full ISO 10993 data file. An FDA master file will be made available to CoorsTek customers making PMA and 510(k) submissions.
BioPEKK polymers offer strength, stiffness, and low friction and wear. The material's dimensional stability even under extreme pressure, along with its other properties, makes it suitable for use in numerous orthopedic applications. Examples cited by the company include spinal spacers, cages, rods, and hip and knee components. CoorsTek can supply fully finished, packaged, and sterilized BioPEKK parts and assemblies.
With extensive engineering, testing, and manufacturing capabilities, CoorsTek designs and manufactures components, integrated assemblies, and automated systems for a broad cross section of high-technology applications. The medical device industry represents a core business sector for the company.
