Medtronic designed the RestoreAdvanced spinal stimulator to ease chronic pain. However according to a study in the journal Brain, it also has some appliciations with assisting paralyzed patients. Researchers at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and UCLA implanted the RestoreAdvanced in four patients with lower limb paralysis and found that, coupled with regular physical therapy, the implant allowed them to regain some function in their legs and even stand for short periods of time.
