Medical Equipment Can Be Fabricated From Antimicrobial Copper

A company is fabricating medical equipment out of copper alloys that destroy greater than 99.9% of bacteria within two hours of exposure. The company says that including the copper in touch surfaces, such as the tops of carts and tables, shelves, bedrails, and handles, can reduce patient exposure to the types of bacteria that cause healthcare-acquired infections. The alloys are wear resistant and remain effective despite any natural tarnishing or repeated wet and dry abrasion. Any product that can be fabricated from stainless steel can be made with these alloys, which contain at least 60% copper. The company is registered by EPA to work with antimicrobial copper alloys.
