Spotlight on Filters and IV Components
Stopcock
An OEM stopcock is designed for speed, ease of use, and efficiency. A user of the Twist-N-Ject stopcock attaches a syringe containing fluid medicine to the axial port located on top of the lever, twists the syringe barrel to point the lever toward the desired port, and then injects the medicine. Patents and 510(k) clearance have been secured. The device is available off the shelf. G L Medical, 9814 Curwood Pl., Beverly Hills, CA 90210.
Luer fittings
Luer fittings in a variety of configurations and materials are available to accommodate tubing
of 1¼16-1¼2 in. ID. Precision luers are offered in standard, panel-mount, tee, elbow, coupler, adapter, and plug configurations, and are molded from such resins as nylon, polysulfone, polycarbonate, and PEEK. The virgin materials are lot traceable. Luer tapers meet ANSI and ISO standards for luer compatibility. Value Plastics Inc., 3325
Timberline Rd., Fort Collins, CO 80525.
Ultrafiltration membrane
A spiral-wound, back-flushable, negative-pressure ultrafiltration membrane is designed as an alternative to hollow-fiber membranes. The compact SpiraSep offers the benefits of high packing density, no fiber breakage or potting problems, manufacturing efficiencies, high flux rates, and low operating costs. Built from independently selectable components, the filter elements are mounted on a stainless-steel rack and immersed in an open tank. The system design minimizes membrane fouling and enables consistent delivery of water with turbidity below 0.1 ntu. Trisep Corp., 93 S. La Pareta Ln., Goleta, CA 93117.
Needleless-access components
Disposable IV components that facilitate needle-free access and compliance can
be supplied in custom configurations. SmartSite needleless-valve components feature a high flow rate, a low priming volume, and a straight-through fluid path equivalent to an 18-gauge needle. The hospital-recognized valve is latex- and DEHP-free, has smooth easy-to-swab surfaces, and is highly chemical resistant. The full product line includes a luer-lock valve port, y-body valve port, tee-connector valve port, triport, vial-access device, and access pin. Alaris Medical Systems Inc., 10221 Wateridge Cir., San Diego, CA 92121.
Plastic kit components
Plastic components and subassemblies, including ports, connectors, check valves, luers, and flow regulators, are available from a supplier of parts for IV delivery systems. Sterile, individually packaged kit components such as umbilical cord clamps, stopcocks, cardiology connectors, and cannulae also are supplied. Connectors, tubing, and filters for respiratory equipment are provided in adult, pediatric, and neonatal sizes. DirectMed Inc., 150 Pratt Oval, Glen Cove, NY 11542.
Cartridge filters
A line of cartridge filters is designed to remove from pharmaceutical processing water both bacteria and the endotoxins left by bacteria that have been destroyed by heat, chemical disinfection, or mechanical means. FiberFlo 50 cartridges employ proprietary polysulfone hollow-fiber membrane technology. They are validated to remove five endotoxin units per milliliter to below detection levels. Each membrane lot is tested for retention of 0.05-µm latex beads to ensure proper filtration by size exclusion. Minntech Corp., Filtration Technologies Group, 14605 28th Ave. N., Minneapolis, MN55447.
Miniature clamps
A line of miniature hose and tube clamps is designed to satisfy medical device and diagnostic industry requirements for precision clamping. Compatible with medical-grade tubes and hoses, the clamps effectively close sizes as small as 0.098 in. The manufacturer provides total customer support for numerous medical applications. Oetiker Inc., 3305 Wilson St., P.O. Box 217, Marlette, MI 48453.
