Digital health and mobile health technologies have proliferated in 2015, and large medtech companies are also sitting up and taking notice of the capabilities they offer.
For Medtronic's CEO, Omar Ishrak, digital technologies enable medtech companies to be accountable for their therapies over a longer time horizon. Instead of episodic care delivered for a set price, all players in the healthcare continuum - be they providers or insurance companies or medtech firms - are going to be rewarded for better patient management over a longer period of time.
Digital and mobile technologies offers the tools to help medtech in that evolution, Ishrak believes. He expanded on this theme in an interview in August, as part of a wide-ranging discussion on innovation, the biggest threat to medtech and on the company's approach to the changing medtech landscape.
