BUSINESS PLANNING & TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

Biolase (Irvine, CA) collaborated with (San Clemente, CA) in the development of the Ezlase soft tissue dental laser, which was designed with ease of use as its guiding principle. Management of the delicate, 5-ft-long insulated glass laser fiber cable is achieved with a dual-function winding spool, located behind the handpiece. This open-centered spool, comprised of an elastomeric inner ring and hollow outer enclosure, maintains a minimal bend radius and optimizes the winding and unwinding process. When the fiber is wound for storage, the tapered ring directs the fiber inward to maximize capacity without tangling. The gap between the ring's lip and the spool chamber exerts enough pressure to keep the coiled fiber from spilling out. A simple side pull of the handpiece deflects the pliable lip and allows the fiber to be released like line from a spinning reel—no laborious unwinding is necessary.
