The Piccolo Xpress from Abaxis (Union City, CA), developed in collaboration with (Puget Ville, France), is a point-of-care blood chemistry analyzer for use in medical or veterinary applications. An untrained operator can obtain up to 14 different blood chemistry values from a 100 μl sample. The screen displays test status in a clear graphical manner that can be read from a distance. The test is complete in less than 15 minutes, and the results are clearly displayed and can be printed on adhesive labels. The instrument is transportable due to its small size and integrated handle, and it can be run reliably froma 12-V car battery as a power source in the field. The system makes use of USB ports for full connectivity.
