Atek Acquires Medtronic’s Buildings

Atek Medical Manufacturing (Grand Rapids, MI; has acquired medical manufacturing and sterilization buildings from Medtronic Inc., also of Grand Rapids. Atek provides contract manufacturing services including product design, new product launch, assembly, supply-chain management, sterilization management, and product distribution.
According to the company’s CEO, Christy Bieber Orris, “Atek Medical Manufacturing is committed to a long-term relationship with Medtronic and to manufacturing in the Grand Rapids area.”

She goes on to say, “We have invested heavily in our medical business over the last year and continue to strengthen our skilled engineering, quality, and supply-chain expertise. This has resulted in diversified product lines used in cardiac surgery, surgical navigation, orthopedics and orthopedic implants, and new customers.”

Mitch Parrish, vice president of cardiac surgery operations and quality for Medtronic, says, “Atek continues to be a strategic partner for our cardiac surgery business by providing consistent, quality products used by our customers all over the world. This transaction continues the transition of our manufacturing facilities in Grand Rapids over to Atek.”

Atek plans to continue aggressive investment in its medical business. “Our goal is to be the most sought-after manufacturing partner in the industry,” Orris says. “We don’t want to be the biggest, we just want to set the bar against which all contract manufacturers are measured.”
