Competitive Bidding on the Horizon

CMS yesterday published its blueprint for a competitive bidding process on durable medical equipment to begin in January. The impact on industry is expected to be tremendous: Today's Washington Post has an article with some doom-and-gloom quotes. In particular, some small businesses could face dire financial consequences. It's understandable why this is happening, though. A new report states that the Medicare program will be insolvent by 2018.

Still, durable medical equipment accounts for only $8 billion of the $336 billion Medicare spends each year. Competitive bidding may be necessary, but this particular program isn't going to change the big picture by itself. Therefore, modifications that would help small businesses, such as excluding the program from rural areas, should be made.
