The iPhone has been the go-to platform for mobile health apps and devices for a fews year now, and Apple knows this. Not content to just be a hardware platform, the company doubled down on its commitment to digital health this year.
First, it unveiled its HealthKit app and developer platform, which promises to aggregate data across all of its users' health apps and devices. Apple also partnered with Mayo Clinic in 2014 to turn HealthKit into a true platform for patient monitoring. The recently unveiled Apple Watch promises to put HealthKit, as well as any number of third-party health and fitness apps, into a convenient and functional form factor.
With so many devices available to collect all manner of metrics on patients, Apple's efforts have demonstrated first and foremost that the real value in digital health is in helping patients and consumers makes sense of all that data and take action.
