One of the big hits on the exhibition floor at this year's BIOMEDevice Boston conference has been the Baxter robot made by Rethink Robotics. The robot is designed for a wide range of manufacturing tasks including material handling, simple line loading and unloading, basic packaging and unpackaging tasks, material handling, and light assembly. The company is touting its ease of use and intergration with line workers. Rather than needing to be programmed, Baxter can be “trained” in minutes by line workers to perform simple tasks and can be easily set up, out of the box, in about an hour. The robot is also capable of working without a safety cage and features an software development kit for custom programming. The company says the robot can save companies over $300,000 in operational costs over human operators to perform the same simple tasks.
