Ultrasound Found to Impact Fetal Brain Development
A study on mice has produced some results that could encourage doctors to limit the number of ultrasound scans they perform on pregnant women. A report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences states that when pregnant mice were exposed to ultrasound, a few nerve cells in the developing brains of their fetuses did not extend correctly in the cerebral cortex.

The Associated Press hit the wires last night with an article about the study. The authors say that their findings do not mean doctors should stop using ultrasound, but that it should be used only when necessary. "Entertainment" ultrasounds and consumer purchases of ultrasound equipment should be discouraged.
