In May 2015, Michael Stanley Kaplan, a urologist in Las Vegas, was sentenced to four years in prison for reusing single-use needle guides on patients during prostate procedures, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release. The release describes trial evidence as showing that Kaplan had his employees reuse needle guides a few times and that between mid-December 2010 and mid-March 2011, he conducted about 120 procedures but only used fewer than 10 needle guides total for those procedures.
