Electrodynamic Test Systems
Designed by the ElectroForce Systems Group of Bose Corp., the ElectroForce 3200 Series II and ElectroForce 3330 Series II test instruments measure low-amplitude displacement with high levels of accuracy and measurement resolution. Suited for use in the development of medical devices and materials and calibrated to the ASTM E-2309 standard, the electromagnetically driven test systems use advanced stroke-measurement technologies that extend the lower range of reliable displacement data by a factor of 10 with reference to previous test instruments offered by the manufacturer. With measurement resolution of 1 nm and accuracies in the micron range, they help product designers to better understand small-scale changes that affect biomaterial, engineered material, and component properties. The instruments have load capacities of 450 and 3000 N, respectively. Earlier versions of the systems can be upgraded to the current performance levels for accuracy and resolution.

Optically Clear Adhesive
Developed by Master Bond Inc., optically clear Master Bond UV15-7 one-component adhesive produces tough, durable, and nonyellowing bonds, seals, and coatings. The UV-curable low-viscosity adhesive is 100% reactive and contains no solvents or diluents. It offers good adhesion to a variety of substrates, including glass, metals, plastics, polycarbonates, and polymer films. Resistant to chemicals and thermal shock, it also exhibits dimensional stability, has a Shore D hardness above 70, and is a good electrical insulator. The adhesive cures rapidly at ambient temperatures, even at a thickness of 1/8 in. or more, and is not inhibited by air. In addition, it features a service temperature range of -60° to 300°F and a tensile strength that exceeds 5000 psi.

Clear Polyimide Tubing
Suited for medical device applications that require visual monitoring, UV transparency, or imaging transmission, clear polyimide tubing from Putnam Plastics Corp. exhibits a tensile strength of 17,000 psi and flexural modulus of 550,000 psi. Such properties make the tubing desirable for the fabrication of specialized catheter lumens and shafts, according to the manufacturer. The tubing is highly resistant to wear, heat, radiation, and electrical arcing. Unlike traditional dark amber polyimide, clear polyimide allows for custom coloring; options include some colors that were
not previously available in polyimide. Tubes can be produced with walls as thin as 0.0005 in. and with tolerances as close as ±0.0002 in. Potential catheter applications range from imaging diagnosis to ablation therapy.

Planetary Gearbox
Small G30A planetary gearboxes from Pittman, engineered to complement five series of dc motors, are designed for maximum torque density and durability and allow a range of output torques and speeds. The mounting profile of the gearbox is 1.20 in. diam or, when the optional mounting flange is used, 1.50 in. square. Lengths vary between 1.33 and 2.02 in., depending on the gear reduction. The gearboxes are offered in 14 standard reduction ratios ranging from 4:1 to 1296:1 and allow maximum output loads of 350 to 1250 oz-in. In addition, custom gear ratios can be configured to suit nearly any application requirement. Designed for challenging motion applications, including medical devices, these gearboxes incorporate sintered-steel planet gears to promote high torque capacity and low audible noise in a compact design. Gearbox output is directed through a Type 416 stainless-steel shaft and a sintered-metal output bearing.

Sensor Development Kit
The Sensor Prototype Kit is a plug-and-play tool designed to accelerate prototyping, validation, and product development for medical gas-measurement instruments. Offered by Cal Sensors, the kit consists of two digital drive boards with integrated electronics; a one- to four-element detector; a high-output, high-pulse rate emitter; and development software. Supporting PbS and PbSe detector technologies, the kit is supplied as a complete prototyping package, although the developer also gives engineers the option of purchasing subsets of it. One of the boards contains all of the circuitry to drive the detector, and the other drives the emitter; both provide the analog-to-digital conversion necessary for computer control and analysis. The single- or multichannel detector included provides sensitivity of 1 to 5 µm. The software enables engineers to confirm signal presence and relative strength quickly, with the raw data generated being easily integrated into larger software platforms for in-depth analysis.
