Millipore Refocuses Product Line with New Diagnostic Unit

OUTSOURCING NEWS

The acquisition of Serologicals enables Millipore to extend its lateral-flow test capabilities.

Millipore Corp.'s newly formed diagnostic unit, based in Bedford, MA, will expand its OEM product line. The company reorganized its OEM Membrane and Media group and integrated the subsidiaries of Serologicals into the strategic unit. Millipore acquired Serologicals, which included Chemicon, Upstate, and Celliance, last July.

“For years, Millipore has been a key partner to diagnostic manufacturers with our lateral-flow membranes and chromatography media, but now we have extended product offerings and capabilities to better serve our customers,” according to Martin Lipman, vice president of the company's diagnostic unit. “With Chemicon, Upstate, and Celliance's antibodies and reagents, manufacturers have a choice of coming to one place to get everything they require.”

Millipore has mostly focused on pharmaceutical and laboratory services. The acquisition indicates a new focus for the firm.

In addition to the antibodies and reagents, the diagnostic business unit's line will include existing products such as chromatography media products and hydrophilic, hydrophobic, ultrafiltration, and diagnostic membranes. More than 4000 hybridoma cell lines will be available as a result of the addition of the Chemicon and Upstate businesses. Celliance is contributing its Bioscot blood-typing monoclonal antibodies in forms from standard intermediates for further manufacturing use to finished diagnostic reagents.

Millipore has also reached an agreement involving protein kinase screening with Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, a division of Janssen Pharmaceutica

N.V. The screening will be conducted using Millipore's Upstate KinaseProfiler radiometric service.

Millipore provides direct support to OEM engineers through all stages of product and process development. The company offers professional services such as SEM analysis, protocol review, troubleshooting, and contract manufacturing. Millipore is located in Billerica, MA.
