5 Cutting-Edge Ortho Materials You Should Know About
1. Biomaterials from Beer Brewing ByproductsResearchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in Spain recently discovered in a study that biomaterials for bone regeneration can be developed from beer brewing waste. The group observed that the waste obtained from the beer brewing process contains the main chemical components found in bones—phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and silica. After undergoing modification processes, the waste can be used as a scaffold to promote bone regeneration in bone grafts, or as a coating for prosthetics. The group hopes to use the synthetic calcium phosphates as matrices and coatings for orthopedic implants, exploiting their similarity to the composition of bone.Continue >>
