San Jose State University to Host Medical Device Conference

The 2012 Bay Area Biomedical Device Conference will highlight emerging technologies, provide advice on taking device ideas to market, and offer networking opportunities for medical device professionals. "The Bay Area is home to a few hundred biomedical device companies and continues to be a center for innovation," says Guna Selvaduray, PhD, a materials scientist, professor, and biomedical engineering coordinator at San Jose State University. "This conference provides an important venue for biomedical device professionals to network with one another while also exposing them to thought-provoking presentations from other innovators and leaders in the field."

One of the first speakers at the event will be Albert Chin, MD, who has more than three decades of experience in medical device development. His talk is titled “Clinical Insight Correlates to Medical Device Innovation.”

That talk will be followed by a presentation from Mehran J. Khorsandi, MD, who will speak on the evolution of coronary interventions. Khorsandi, MD is an interventional cardiologist who has performed more than 7000 procedures.

From there, the event will offer attendees the choice between parallel tracks: the first portion of which will be dedicated to additive manufacturing while the second will consider the science of implantable medical device testing. Following lunch, attendees can choose between presentations on tissue engineering and retinal implants.

After that, plenary sessions will consider neurostimulation and biomedical device failure modes. The final presentation will be a CEO panel that will provide insight on starting a medical device business, which will be followed by a reception.

Platinum and gold sponsors of this year's event include BMES, LyChron, Nutek, ISIS, Penumbra, and Intuitive Surgical. "We are grateful to the large number of companies that have shown their confidence in our conference by joining us as sponsors," Dr. Selvaduray says.

Registration can be performed on the San Jose State University website.
