Technology Cost

When taken in the aggregate, the primary controllable drivers of hospital and physician costs are hospital technology and market structure.

Technology is a major driver of healthcare costs. Technology and treatment patterns account for about 18% of the variation in hospital inpatient and outpatient costs. New healthcare technology often increases healthcare costs, even when it lowers the unit cost of a service. Technology that makes procedures less risky and less invasive broadens the potential group of eligible patients. Technology will undoubtedly drive up healthcare costs for the foreseeable future.

Significant growth in medical expenditures is expected in the future, as a result of different growth drivers across technology categories. This graph shows the estimated fully loaded cost growth and drivers by technology category for 2000 to 2005. Costs include device, procedure, and consumables.
