David W. Feigal Jr., MD, director of FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), has announced that he will retire from the agency on April 30.

Feigal was appointed to his current position at CDRH in 1999. Prior to that, he served as the deputy medical director at FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. He joined FDA in 1992 as director of the division of antiviral drugs within the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Upon his retirement from FDA service, Feigal will move to Phoenix, where his wife Ellen Feigal, MD, currently with the National Cancer Institute, will assume the position of vice president for clinical sciences with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (Tgen). Feigal will reportedly resume his medical career in the Phoenix area.

Acting FDA commissioner Lester Crawford, DVM, has named Daniel Schultz, director of the Office of Device Evaluation, as acting director of CDRH.
