Generally speaking, an editor's notes are more interesting when they focus on issues of importance to readers than when they discuss concerns related to the business of publishing. But there are times when it is useful for an editor to describe new directions that will influence how readers interact with a publication. This issue of MX offers just such an opportunity.

It's certainly no secret that modern digital communications channels such as the Internet are every day offering new ways of reaching audiences. The production economies and speed associated with such channels virtually ensure that they will continue to be developed as complements and alternatives to traditional print communication.

Digital communications channels are already playing important roles for MX. For instance, the online version of this issue includes extended content for several important stories, including "The Medtech Marketplace in 2007." The monthly e-newsletter, MX: Issues Update, is delivered to subscribers via e-mail and is also archived at the MX Web site. And installments of the MX Executive Webcast Series also take advantage of Internet-based communications.

With this issue, MX takes another step into the future of business publishing for the medical technology industry. The issue is special in two ways. First, it marks the launch of a digital edition that may eventually make MX available for delivery directly to the desktops of medtech executives anywhere in the world. Second, the digital edition is being distributed initially to a select group of executive subscribers in Europe, marking the first time that MX has addressed readers outside the United States.

We are pleased to welcome those who are receiving MX for the first time in this new digital format. We hope you will stay with us as we continue to develop more innovative means of providing useful information for medical technology executives.
