CM Medical Inaugurates ISO Class 8 Cleanroom

After almost doubling production capacity in 2003, CM Medical (Biel-Bienne, Switzerland; www.cmsa.ch/medical) achieved a new milestone recently when it began providing blister and polyethylene-based packaging services in a new ISO Class 8 cleanroom. The 72-m2 cleanroom received certification in October 2006.
The decision to install a cleanroom is part of a larger strategic initiative at CM Medical. The FDA-registered firm aims to broaden its range of supply-chain offerings while continuing to add value to the services it has traditionally provided. The company processes biocompatible materials, such as titanium alloys, and precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, and palladium to produce microcomponents for dental, spinal, cardiological, and hearing devices.
The firm has had considerable success in the U.S. market, notes Francis Vonrospach, international sales manager, since it began promoting itself here in the 1990s. “The U.S. dollar was strong, and the exchange rate with the Swiss franc worked in our favor,” he says. Needless to say, the exchange rate has experienced a reversal of fortune since then. But CM Medical has weathered the fluctuations well, says Vonrospach. “We are fortunate in that many of our customers have remained loyal. They appreciate the precision that we are able to achieve and our focus on quality,” he explains.
In addition to the new cleanroom, CM Medical recently invested in a state-of-the-art Werth video inspection system and a Tallyrond concentricity tester, which plays a vital role in quality assurance of heart valve housings.
“Our goal is to be a global player, both in our geographical reach and in terms of the services we offer. We are determined to be more than a simple supplier of components and subassemblies,” says Vonrospach.
The company will be exhibiting at MD&M West in February.
