3M’s first and largest healthcare manufacturing facility is primed for a multimillion-dollar expansion. The company said it will invest up to $468 million over the next three years in the plant located in Brookings, SD.

Noting that 3M broke ground for the Brookings plant back in 1969, plant director James Burkhardt said the “expansion will help Brookings and 3M support our great employees in making healthcare products used in the United States and around the world.” He also thanked the state of South Dakota and the Governor's Office of Economic Development for their collaboration.

The work will begin with a $158 million expansion of the plant this year, including the addition of 16 shipping docks, an 8,000-slot warehouse, 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space, and additional lab and office space.

The plant currently is 667,000 square feet and more than 1,000 people work there, making hundreds of medical and surgical products.
