The QTA141 Micro-Reaction Torque Sensor from FUTEK Advanced Sensor Technology Inc. shrinks a large torque sensor into a miniature package. Traditionally, medical device OEMs incorporating motors into their designs often did not have the room to incorporate a standard, strain-gauge based torque sensor. With a 22-mm diameter with a 10-mm height footprint, the QTA141 is capable of mounting directly to miniature BLDC motors. This footprint is a significant decrease in size compared to the company’s TFF400, which measures 50 mm in diameter and 50 mm in height. This decrease in size was achieved without sacrificing performance. The QTA141 also benefits manufacturers in need of a robust, accurate torque measurement platform. As torque is applied to and transmitted through the sensor, elastic deformation occurs within the strain gauges inside, producing measurable change in signal output. This design allows the QTA141 to feature a non-linearity error of +/- 0.5%. Traditionally for miniature motors, OEMs relied on current measurement to calculate the torque generated by the motor. This measurement technique offered poor accuracy, such that the non-linearity error was +/- 5% to 15% of rated motor output. The QTA141's high accuracy and compact size position it as an alternative to current measurement techniques.See it at BIOMEDevice Boston Booth #859[Image courtesy FUTEK Advanced Sensor Technology Inc.]
