A supplier of hydrostatic machining centers is opening a facility in the United States to provide its U.S. customers with application services and support. The German company, Kern Precision Inc. (Webster, MA; www.kernprecision.com), opened its new plant in November.
The company’s product line includes three multiaxis machining centers that are designed to provide positioning accuracies up to 0.3 µm and can process a variety of materials, from aluminum to titanium. Featuring a polymer-concrete machine base for high vibration absorption, the Kern Micro is the newest CNC machining center to evolve from the tool manufacturer’s previous bench-type model. The unit’s frame and cover have been ergonomically redesigned and the tool changer is now encapsulated.
An enclosed, automatic tool changer is also featured on the monobloc Kern Evo. A three-axis machine, the Evo can be retrofitted to incorporate a full five-axis simultaneous dividing head. An active measuring sensor for stabilization is integrated into the Evo’s z-axis. Hydrostatic guides and drives on the machines ensure that there is no metal contact with the moving parts of the axes.
The Kern Pyramid Nano is a nanoprecision machining center that can be used as an alternative to the Evo. Made of a proprietary material, Kern Armorith, the machine’s frame is designed to provide extreme vibration dampening. The machine features five integrated cooling circulators for temperature management, spindle compensation for thermal effects, and tool changing for up to 96 positions.
