The smartphone has been like manna from the heavens for the average consumer giving them capabilities they never had, and didn't even dream of. But some entrepreneurs are trying to unlock its true value by applying into the world of healthcare.  

In the U.S, that may mean getting regulatory approval from the Food and Drug Administration, which is a topic that wil be addressed at the MD&M West Conference and Showcase, February 9-11 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA.

Below is a video slideshow of five technologies that have taken that leap to transforming the smartphone and/or a tablet from a consumer tool into a powerful medical device.

Name of Product: GluCase

Developer: AkibaH Inc.

What it Does: Transforms a smartphone case into an all-in-one glucometer with slots to carry lancets and strips. The device is meant to works with a companion mobile app to show readings and provides data on patient's diet and activity too. AkibaH is conducting a crowdfunding campaign to finalize the device, run a clinical trial and submit data for FDA approval.
