Virginia (Ginni) Rometty is chairman, president and CEO of IBM.
It's under Rometty, who happens to be on the Board of Managers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, that IBM has decided to wield the power of its Watson supercomputer in the world of healthcare.
Everyone in healthcare is hungry for insights gleaned from Big Data, and recognizing that IBM formally lauched IBM Watson Health as a business unit with headquarters in Boston in April. The hope is that patterns will emerge from analyzing large volumes of medical data that can help physicians to make more meaningful decisions.
The overarching goal is apply advanced analytics and cognitive computing in order to assist primary care doctors, large hospital systems and physician networks improve healthcare quality and achieve healthier patient outcomes.
That interest is coming from diverse sources is evidenced by the fact that companies like Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson and Apple are collaborating with IBM Watson Health to make sure that consumer and medical devices can be optimized for better data collection, analysis and feedback.
