Zimmer's recently expanded global research and development center added 275 jobs and nearly 100,000 sq ft of laboratory space.

Zimmer Holdings Inc., an orthopedics manufacturer and distributor headquartered in Warsaw, IN, expanded its manufacturing and distribution facilities in May to meet growing demands for its products.

The $66 million project increased Zimmer's existing manufacturing facility by 120,000 sq ft and added 100,000 sq ft to the company's 250,000-sq-ft distribution center. “We have other manufacturing and distribution sites around the world, but our largest concentration of facilities is in Warsaw. With these expansions we will have more than 1.5 million sq ft under roof,” said Zimmer president and CEO, David Dvorak, in a press release.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. made Zimmer's decision easy. The organization offered the company up to $1.9 million in tax credits to encourage expansion in Indiana. Governor Mitch Daniels joined company executives at the announcement of the expansion. “We're enormously proud of Zimmer and that Indiana has earned the opportunity to host this latest expansion,” Daniels said.

The latest expansion is the third for the company in a three-year period, creating 140 new jobs in the area. In late 2005, Zimmer expanded its global research and development center, adding 275 jobs and nearly 100,000 sq ft of laboratory space. The year before that, the company completed a $64 million project to expand its manufacturing and distribution centers.
