Earlier in the week we mentioned increasingly popularity of the stethoscope app for the iPhone. Some experts believe that FDA may eventually regulate certain healthcare apps. An FDA spokesman said yesterday that a draft guidance is under way to address the technology.
In an e-mail to eWEEK, FDA's Dick Thompson said: "We are developing draft guidance that will help clarify an appropriate policy and role for the FDA regarding the regulation of mobile applications, including those on smartphones. Some mobile applications are very similar to traditional software applications that the FDA has already classified or regulated, but we believe that further clarifications on mobile applications would be helpful."
