Tube's Silver Lining Protects PatientsTube's Silver Lining Protects Patients

FDA cleared a breathing tube that could reduce the risk of acquiring pneumonia while on a ventilator. Manufactured by C.R. Bard (Murray HIll, NJ), the Agento endotracheal tube is the first of its kind to be coated with a thin layer of silver, which has antimicrobial properties. It's intended for patients who need a ventilator for 24 hours or more. According to the CDC, 15% of patients on ventilators develop ventilator-associated pneumonia each year, and 26,000 die as a result.
