Noninvasive Continuous Blood Pressure Monitor in Testing

Article-Noninvasive Continuous Blood Pressure Monitor in Testing

Empirical Technologies Corp. (Charlottesville, VA) has created the first noninvasive beat-by-beat arterial blood pressure monitor, and is testing it at three military healthcare facilities. Static blood pressure monitoring is fine for most patients, but some need continuous monitoring, and up until now, the only way to accomplish that has been through invasive catheter-based technologies. The device, called the Caretaker, has a lightly pressurized cuff that wraps around the index finger.

Piezoelectric technology is used to record pulse measurements from the cuff. That information is sent to a computer, which produces a blood pressure reading. The device could be used with automatic infusion technology, which requires a blood pressure reading before infusion.
