Mentor Accused of Supressing Data

Public Citizen, a consumer group, has asked FDA to investigate whether Mentor Corp. (Santa Barbara, CA) suppressed potentially negative data about testing on its silicone breast implants, reports the Washington Post. The group said it learned of the data, which has to do with silicone molecules migrating in pig serum, from a former scientist at Mentor. The scientist, who has not wanted to be identified, said he raised concerns while still employed but was brushed off by superiors.

Mentor and a competitor last year received preliminary approval to put silicone implants back on the market pending completion of certain tests. FDA says that while it takes the allegations seriously, it has found no evidence of wrongdoing so far. Mentor says an FDA inspection in July that covered preclinical testing data found nothing wrong.
