Medical Device Key to Spelling Bee Win

In case our dear readers missed the news, the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee winner was announced last week. The competition features children from around the nation with jaw-dropping spelling abilities (that would put many editors to shame) being challenged with one of our favorite tools—words. Ohio teenager Anamika Veeramani won the competition by correctly spelling "stromuhr." And what exactly is a stromuhr, anyway?

It turns out to be a medical device. According to Merriam-Webster, it's a rheometer (see a photo here and here) designed to measure the amount and speed of blood flow through an artery. The device was designed by German physiologist Carl Ludwig in the mid-19th century.
