ICD Data to Be Made Public
Bowing to growing calls for public disclosure about medical procedures, CMS said it would post data on its Web site today about implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. The New York Times reports that the records show about 4% of patients having at least one complication during an implant. It is suspected that the complication rates vary greatly by doctor and hospital, but that information will not be disclosed.
And it shouldn't be until it can be figured out how to report it in the proper context.
