Former FDA Commissioner Faces Conflict of Interest Charge

According to the New York Times, Lester Crawford is expected to plead guilty to two charges filed against him in federal court in Washington, DC today. Yesterday Crawford was charged with conflict of interest and lying about stock that he and his wife owned in companies that FDA regulates. His lawyer, Barbara Van Gelder stated that she expected him to be fined and put on probation.

Senior FDA employees are not allowed to own shares in companies that the agency regulates. Crawford resigned in September 2005, two months after the Senate confirmed him as FDA commissioner.
