Deep Brain Stimulation Method Holds Promise
Targeted electrical brain stimulation could be a promising way to move semiconscious patients into a more responsive state. According to the Washington Post, this is the first time the technique has been tried on a patient in a "minimally conscious" state. Doctors implanted electrodes into the patient's thalamus region and stimulated the brain on and off for several months. Results revealed Sunday that the patient's abilities to move and communicate significantly improved.

The researchers, from Cornell University, Cleveland Clinic, and the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, said they won't be revealing further information about the patient's progress until the findings are published in a scientific journal. While further studies need to be conducted, the device and technique may offer hope to thousands of the often helpless patients who fall victim to brain damage.
