Public Citizen is also concerned that the amount of estrogen released by the patch varies widely among individual women -- and estrogen is linked to blood clots.FDA has said that the risk of the patch causing a blood clot is low, and therefore the product is still considered to be safe and effective when used as directed. It said that for every 10,000 women who use a hormonal contraceptive for one year, 3-5 will develop a blood clot.
