Now two companies in Minnesota are also developing devices that could help obese adults. EnteroMedics Inc. is conducting trials on its VBLOC therapy and will go after FDA approval by the end of 2009.

Start-up company Leptos Biomedical Inc. is working on a device for chronic obesity that stimulates a certain nerve to control how fast the body burns fat, according to the Star Tribune.The neuromodulation market has great potential. Last year investment in neurodevices rose 10% to $389 million, according to NeuroInsights, and Frost & Sullivan estimates it will grow 16% each year until 2012.
