Boston Scientific to Spend $40 Million on Stent Post-Op Campaign

Article-Boston Scientific to Spend $40 Million on Stent Post-Op Campaign

Boston Scientific has dedicated $40 million to a program educating drug-eluting stent patients about the importance of taking blood thinners after their operations, the Boston Globe reports. The company has produced kits that will go to about 700,000 patients a year.

It will also push to have patients counseled about taking blood thinners before they are discharged from the hospital. All this is coming after the controversy over whether drug-eluting stents are more likely to cause blood clots than their bare-metal counterparts. And the program is unveiled a week after two studies questioned whether stents should be used in non-emergency cases at all.  Is this good medicine? Yes. Does the timing make the company look like it's on the defensive? Yes again.
